Technology was
created to help human life. However, nature itself is a creation of God that
sometimes is not in line with man-made technology. The increasingly
sophisticated technology in fact is often difficult to face the 'sophist'
nature. The proof, there are many events that show sophisticated technology
even though not able to match the forces of nature.
Some of the following events show how when the latest technology deals with natural events or phenomena. Here are five real stories of technology vs nature battles, who wins?
1. Deepwater Horizon
This is the
name of an oil refinery located on the high seas of the United States. With
technology and sophisticated tools, this oil refinery floats on seawater
without stuck at all to the seafloor. There was no significant danger for
years, this oil refinery finally exploded on April 20, 2010.
The cause is
none other than a mistake on the excavation of sludge which is the source point
of the oil. Too deep in the dig, there was a congestion that caused kerosene to
spread throughout the refinery. As a result, the explosion occurred. The event
that caused the eleven workers died was then made a film by director Peter
Berg.
Copiapo Mining
Not much
different from Deepwater Horizon, an explosion also hit a gold mine in Chile
named Copiapo Mining. Happened on August 5, 2010, the gold mine collapsed due
to deep excavation experiments.
Miraculously,
33 workers trapped in the ground for 69 days were rescued. Technological and
communications devices that enable rescue teams and victims to connect make
them work out after being stuck for more than two months.
3. Titanic
Almost everyone
must have heard the Titanic story. In fact, strange if anyone has never seen
this movie in his life. The story of a luxury cruise ship from Southampton to
New York is popular today.
Claimed as the
most luxurious and sophisticated ship at the time, the British-made ship was
believed to not be drowned even though God tried to drown it! Nahas, the
incident of the breaking of a ship with icebergs made the ship split into
drowning and claimed 1,500 lives.
4. Malaysia Flight MH-370
In addition to
water transport, technological events vs. nature also never happened on air
transport alias aircraft. March 8, 2014 became one of the biggest aviation
events. The Malaysian MH-370 flight with departures from Kuala Lumpur to
Beijing was declared missing without a trace.
Missing without
a trace because of unattended radar and black box that never found. Advanced
technology devices such as satellites and radar have not been able to find the
existence of the aircraft. Although there are allegations of piracy by
terrorists, the loss of MH-370 is still widely believed due to poor natural
conditions.
5. Viruses
Virus is one of
the biggest causes of death in the world. It is claimed by WHO which is a world
health organization. However, it is not the virus that has been splitting up
like SARS or Ebola the most deadly. The most deadly viruses are influenza
(flu).
Although
impressed with mild disease and many drugs that can cope, the flu until now is
the virus that most claimed the lives of humans. In the period 1912-1920 alone,
the flu consumed 500 million human victims!
