Mikhail Kalashnikov the inventor of the AK-47 who regretted his innovation



Lieutenant General Mikhail T. Kalashnikov is one of the designers of the most popular weapons in history, the AK-47. The rifle was first launched in 1974 and is still produced today.

Kalashnikov was born on November 10, 1919, in Kuriya, Krai Altai, RSFS Russia . He grew up in a large family of farmers and underwent a bit of formal education.

Kalashnikov initially aspired to become a poet, but his dreams did not materialize because he joined the Russian military in 1938. While on duty in the tank division, he worked on several inventions to improvise the tank's function.


In 1941, he was wounded in the battle of Bryansk against the Nazis Germany, and during his hospitalization, as he recovered he began to invent the design of automatic rifles.

Shortly after the end of World War II, Kalashnikov completed the work of a new type automatic rifle, AK-47. The design was selected in a competition and entered into production.

AK-47 proved easy to use and clean, and works well in different environments, from deserts to forests. The name AK-47 comes from 'Avtomat Kalashnikov' or 'Automatic Kalashnikov', and is often referred to as 'Kalashnikovs'.

Currently, the rifle remains one of Russia's most famous brands. Approximately 100 million Kalashnikovs rifles produced since the beginning were released. His ability to make it a favorite weapon for various armed groups, from military to terrorist.
However, Kalashnikov later expressed regret over those who used his invention of value.

"It is very painful for me to see various criminals using my weapons," Kalashnikov said, according to a Reuters report.

After developing the AK-47, Kalashnikov worked on creating other firearms. He designed several types of machine guns and eventually won the rank of general.

Kalashnikov is considered a national treasure of Russia. In 2004, a museum was established as a tribute to it, in Izhevsk, a Russian city that produces many Kalashnikov design weapons.

He also expanded his brand in the same year by using his last name for the name of vodka.


Despite his age, Kalashnikov worked as a consultant to develop a weapons deal. He also wrote several books, including autobiography.

In 2009, Kalashnikov celebrated his 90th birthday at a special event at the Central Russian Army Museum. According to a FOX News report, Vladimir Putin sent him a written message saying, "Kalashnikovs Rifle is a symbol of our creative genius."


His health declined by the end of 2012, he underwent intensive care at a heart hospital in Izhevsk. There are several reports that contradict his current condition, but in general his health is fragile. Kalashnikov then died on December 23, 2013 at the age of 94 years.
